联合国的「教科文组织」（UNESCO）基于艺术家的「自我认定原则」，试图为艺术家下一个普世性的定义﹕

「任何人曾创造艺术品，或对艺术品赋予创造性的表达，又或是再创造艺术品的，而他视艺术创作为他生活中一个要素的，并对艺术与文化的发展作出贡献的，而且曾经或者要求被承认是一个艺术家的人，不论他是否有就业上的或者有协会会籍上的任何联繫

（UNESCO 1980:5）。（”any person who creates or gives creative expression to, or recreates works of art, who considers his artistic creation to be an essential part of his life, who contributes in this way to the development of art and culture and who is or asks to be recognised as an artist, whether or not he is bound by any relations of employment or association.”）
