(HONG KONG, 26 Aug 2022) Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) proudly presents its second “ARTS • TECH” exhibition  --  Cells that fire together wire together, from 27 August to 18 September at M7 (7 Mallory Street), Wan Chai.

GayBird, Artist-curator of the exhibition, says, “Memories make up the source of inspiration in this exhibition. This place provides the raw materials - information, texts, sounds, data, myths, tales…etc. Memories can be true and real. But most of the time, they can appear as a blur, enmeshed with fabricated fantasies. This exhibition does not look for accurate recalls of past events, but explores where these myriad traces of memories, with a spark of imagination mixed in.”

Ms Winsome Chow, Chief Executive of HKADC, says, "With the support of Urban Renewal Authority, this is our first ARTS • TECH Exhibition to be held at the revitalised site of M7, with aims to fostering the arts to connect with the community, the public to rekindle the community spirit and broaden the appreciation of the arts through technology with imagination and passion for Hong Kong.”

Cells that fire together wire together presents five sets of work created by GayBird who is working in sound and media installation, Ip Yuk-yiu in game programming, Hugo Yeung in digital programming and Kachi Chan in visual installation. Using different technologies, such as AI, facial tracking, machine learning and more, artists explore, analyse and work on the sources of “memories”.

List of Artworks:

The Wings of Hippocampus by GayBird

This artwork is composed of eight sound installations, using materials including paper, motor, air compressor and LED lights. The recurring sound and movements of the flapping papers create different sound, shape and visual effect. A special “paper performance” that will engage with audience’s hippocampus to influence different memories and imaginations.

(Un)recognition by GayBird

This work makes use of image recognition in artificial intelligence (AI) as an allusion to human memory. One photo is picked from each year of Hong Kong’s history, from its colonial beginning to the present (1841-2022). The machine learning programme recognises the things in the photos, and then turns the recognised objects into computer language and evolves them into sounds. A collage of 181 AI-processed photos resembles an unrecognisable memory and a time map of Hong Kong.

OnClose() by Hugo Yeung

onClose() is an interactive video installation as a reflection on the act of remembering. A fuzzy, seemingly chaotic moving image is placed in front of the spectator, who will be invited to close their eyes and try to remember a certain location or scenario from the past. While their eyes are shut, the fuzzy images in front will slowly transform and become clearer over time, until the spectator decides to open their eyes, they will catch a glimpse of the clear images, before they quickly dissolve back into their original distorted state. The experience reflects on the act of memory recollection and aims to accent on moments of sensual reconstruction from the mind.

Fall Ground by Ip Yuk-yiu

This video-game creation is inspired by the tragic memories of Wan Chai’s independent bookstore owner Law Chi-wah, who was found buried beneath 20 boxes of books in 2008. Through the interactive video game, audience will experience the relationship between written text and human.

Reconstructed by Kachi Chan

Using AI, film dialogues, literature and artist’s writings about Wan Chai, this work explores the expressions of realities made by memory reconstruction and AI image generation.
