2015/16 Film Arts

Film Festivals and Independent/ Feature Screening Events and Attendance

In 2015/16*, a total of 846 programmes for Film Festivals** were held, with an increase of 2% from the year before.  The number of screenings for Film Festivals rose by 5% to 1,348. Both the number of programmes and screenings for Independent/Feature Screenings had been on the rise for the last three years.  A total of 776 programmes and 1,351 screenings were held, with an increase of 11% and 8% respectively when compared to the previous year. The total number of screenings for Independent/Feature Screenings equals to that for Film Festivals for the first time.

The attendance for Film Festivals increased slightly this year to 155,000, while the attendance for Independent/Feature Screenings exceeded 120,000, with an increase of 14% from the previous year.

Paid Screenings and Box Office Income

Both the number of paid screenings for Film Festivals and Independent/Feature Screenings increased to a five-year high with a total of 2,262 screenings.

The box office income of Film Festivals rose to $8.41 million this year, while that of Independent/Feature Screenings reached $9.02 million this year, with a sharp increase of 60%, which was mainly driven from the live screenings held in the year.

The number of programmes in 2015/16 is based on programmes held during the financial year from 1 April 2015 to 31 March 2016.

** The duration of the Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) spans across two financial years. Data from the 39th HKIFF were counted in 2015/16, data from the 40th HKIFF were counted in 2016/17, and so on.
