聯合國的「教科文組織」（UNESCO）基於藝術家的「自我認定原則」，試圖為藝術家下一個普世性的定義﹕

「任何人曾創造藝術品，或對藝術品賦予創造性的表達，又或是再創造藝術品的，而他視藝術創作為他生活中一個要素的，並對藝術與文化的發展作出貢獻的，而且曾經或者要求被承認是一個藝術家的人，不論他是否有就業上的或者有協會會籍上的任何聯繫

（UNESCO 1980:5）。（”any person who creates or gives creative expression to, or recreates works of art, who considers his artistic creation to be an essential part of his life, who contributes in this way to the development of art and culture and who is or asks to be recognised as an artist, whether or not he is bound by any relations of employment or association.”）
