Only 7 more days before Hong Kong Arts Development Council closes its call for public views on its 2019 Nomination Exercise

The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) has completed some preliminary suggestions regarding its 2019 Nomination of Representatives of Arts Interests (Nomination Exercise).  These suggestions have been floored to the public since last month, and only 7 more days remain of this month-long call for public opinion on the Nomination Exercise.  Members who care the local arts and culture are encouraged to seize the time left to actively express their valuable views on the matter before 17 September 2018.

Established in 1995, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council is a statutory body set up to promote the development of arts in Hong Kong. Under section 3 of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council Ordinance (Chapter 472), the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region may appoint up to 10 persons nominated by the specified arts interests as members of the HKADC.  The current term of office of the HKADC members will expire on 31 December 2019.  Members/employees of eligible arts organisations and individual arts workers may apply to participate in the Nomination Exercise to nominate representatives of the respective arts interests for the Chief Executive’s consideration for appointment as members of the HKADC for the next term (i.e. 2020-2022). The 10 specified arts interests include Arts Administration, Arts Criticism, Arts Education, Xiqu, Dance, Drama, Film Arts, Literary Arts, Music and Visual Arts.

HKADC is now introducing preliminary suggestions regarding the Nomination Exercise, and will, upon reception of public views on the matter, consolidate and make its overall recommendations to the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB).

The preliminary suggestions for the 2019 nomination exercise include revising the eligibility criteria of individual arts workers by renewing the list of recognised local arts competitions or awards and updating the list of arts space in regard to the eligibility criteria of “individual artist tenants”.  Document containing these suggestions are available at https://www.voteforhkadc2019.hk

Members of the arts and cultural community are cordially invited to forward their views in writing to [email protected] on or before 17 September.

HKADC has already held internal briefing sessions in July with each of its ten arts interests to collect views from its members, arts advisors and examiners.  Followed by one-month’s time to collect public views, HKADC has also held two public briefing sessions on the 24th and the 29th of August at the Administration Building of Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui and the Leighton Hill Community Hall on Hong Kong Island respectively, for the purpose of collecting public opinion on the Nomination Exercise.
