Since 2014, the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) has been actively implementing the ADC Arts Space Scheme (Scheme) through various ways to address the needs of space of the arts community and at the same time, to promote local arts development. At present, there are three ADC Arts Space in operation which include Genesis in Aberdeen, Po Shau Centre and Pan Asia Centre in Kwun Tong. HKADC today launched the opening of Tai Po Arts Centre (TPAC or the Centre), the largest arts venue under the Scheme.
Located at 12 On Pong Road, Tai Po and adjacent to the Tai Po Civic Centre, TPAC is close to the heart of Tai Po District. Retrofitted from the former Tai Po Government Secondary School, TPAC is a project under the Signature Project Scheme (SPS) proposed by Tai Po District Council to the Government. HKADC is now entrusted to operate the Centre. The Centre is a six-storey building with a total gross floor area of approximately 83,560 sq. ft. The allocation of space is as follows:
Floor | Use |
G/F | Shops and Food & Beverage |
1/F | Shops |
2/F | Arts Information Centre, Black Box (suitable for small–scale performance), Music Room 1 & 2, Dance Studio and Arts Studios |
3/F - 4/F | Arts Studios |
5/F | Arts Studios and White Box (suitable for exhibition) |
The Centre offers a total of 21 independent arts studios ranging from approximately 900 sq. ft. to 5,800 sq. ft., which are rented to artists or arts groups engaged in the performing arts. The rent for the first three-year term is HK$6 per square feet. The tenant recruitment was open for application in April 2019 and the response was enthusiastic. The selected artists or arts groups have started moving in since September. A list of the tenants is at the appendix for reference:
Apart from the arts studios, TPAC also offers public hiring facilities for performance, exhibition and practice purposes. Among the four arts spaces currently operated by HKADC, only TPAC provides public hiring facilities. Operation of the Centre will further boost arts promotion and stimulate arts interaction between the arts practitioners and the district residents. In addition, the Arts Information Centre in TPAC will give the public access to the publications and materials archived by HKADC over the years. This is an important milestone in the arts archival work of HKADC.
