Hong Kong Arts Development Council presents JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power Zan Baak Fo by local ceramic artist Annie Wan

(Hong Kong, 4 December 2017) Zan Baak Fo, an interactive exhibition of the JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power by renowned ceramic artist Annie Wan Lai Kuen will be opened to the public from 19December 2017 to 21 January 2018 at Ping Shek Estate Podium, as well as from 23 December 2017 to 28 January 2018 at Sheung Wan New Street. In this latest series of work Annie has set out to demystify the medium of clay, and unfold different practices of ceramic production. A series of free workshops including, ‘Experiencing the Mobile Potter’s Wheel’ and a ‘Clay Board Stamping Parents-Children Workshop’ will be hosted during the exhibition.
Zan Baak Fo is the first arts exhibition in the JOCKEY CLUB New Arts Power, which has been presented across Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) and supported by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to showcase 18 internationally celebrated Hong Kong artists and performance groups, allowing the Hong Kong community to appreciate their creativity.
The exhibition Zan Baak Fo is an extension of Annie’s presentation, Everyday a rainbow, at the 11th Gwangju Biennale that saw her working with a local Korean store to transform it into a beautiful rainbow utilizing the colourful packaging of everyday products. Zan Baak Fo will be embedded into Cheung Hing, a local grocery store in the Ping Shek Estate and in a gallery in Sheung Wan, and focuses on over 30 groceries products and daily life commodities that have been replicated into ceramic art pieces. The art works will be displayed alongside the traditional merchandise of the store. As Annie explained, in Cantonese Zan means precious and authentic, her current work continues her exploration and demonstration of the coexistence of arts and daily life.
Should art come with a price? Was Walter Benjamin correct with his comment that “the aura of a work of art is devalued by mechanical reproduction?” We nourish our bodies with food, do we also need art to nourish our spirits with art? Do artists have a responsibility create works that engage the community, and people who would otherwise not be open to art? These are the questions Annie is examining in Zan Baak Fo, and which she calls the public to discuss with her.
All works will be sold in the gallery in Sheung Wan during the exhibition, at prices of the original products that inspired them. Moreover, sessions of public programmes will be hosted, details follow.
| Experiencing the Mobile Potter’s Wheel | |
| Highlight: | The mobile potter’s wheel brings back the most original way to turn the wheel: by using feet. Guests will be travelling through the community with this mobile device and demonstrate the throwing process, hoping to spread the wonderful experiential journey to the public. |

| Clay Board Stamping Parents-Children Workshop | |
| Highlight: | Collecting small things from our community such as flowers, grass, pebbles and pressing them on soft clay boards and the stories of lives are concealed with it. Through the easy clay board stamping, parents and children can capture all the interesting and meaningful stories and memories that they have come across during the day. |
