Room 307c, L3, Sea World Culture and Arts Center (Shenzhen)
From 2 August to 1 September 2024
Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) actively promote arts exchange between the Mainland and Hong Kong. After making a successful chapter of HKADC's "ARTS • TECH Exhibition 2.0" in April, Beyond the Singularity – Hong Kong's premier AI-themed exhibition – is touring to the Sea World Culture and Arts Center (SWCAC) and demonstrate Hong Kong's latest arts technologies to the visitors from 2 August to 1 September 2024 at Shenzhen.
Curated by Isaac Leung, Beyond the Singularity engages artists from across disciplines and generations, encouraging them to incorporate technology where they haven't tried before. At the exhibition, audiences immerse themselves into the exploration of the boundaries of arts and AI tools through media including ink art, western painting, photography and cross-disciplinary arts.
Isaac Leung draws inspirations from science classics. "The term 'singularity' was initially introduced by Albert Einstein in 1915 to describe the centre of a black hole characterised by infinite density and gravity, and popularised by science fiction author Vernor Vinge to designate a hypothetical future when AI advancements reach an infinite self-improvement loop, leading to unprecedented changes. In 2005, computer scientist and futurist Ray Kurzweil incorporated the term 'singularity' in his book, predicting that computers will surpass the cognitive abilities of humans by 2045, resulting in breakthroughs in various fields in a manner that humans cannot currently comprehend or predict.”
Over the experimentation of AI tools through workshops, months-long tutorials and instruction from AI experts, this process led participating artists to raise philosophical questions on a wide array of topics, including the limits of language, AI's influence on culture, the blurring line between reality and artificiality, authorship, free will, human-machine collaboration, originality in art and AI's inherent limitations.
Dr Frankie Yeung Wai-shing, Vice Chairman of HKADC, has been impressed by the exhibition and shared at the opening ceremony of the Shenzhen edition, "Beyond the Singularity has been a successful milestone in Hong Kong and received over 200 pieces of positive media coverage. Supporting this touring exhibition, HKADC hopes that the exhibition will share the latest art-tech experiences with the audiences in Shenzhen, and tie in Hong Kong’s strategic positioning as the East-meets-West centre for arts cultural exchange under the 14th Five-Year Plan."
The Shenzhen edition of Beyond the Singularity features 5 groups of artists, including Kurt Chan Yuk-keung, Chui Pui-chee, Mak2, So Hing-keung, Frog King & Frog Queen (Kwok Mang-ho & Cho Hyun-jae). The exhibition will be held from 2 August to 1 September. Over the course of the exhibition, a wide range of public programmes and educational events will be featured.
