Annual Arts Survey Result Dashboard – 2019/20 Performing Arts

Despite that two facilities West Kowloon FreeSpace and Tai Po Arts Centre commenced operation in year 2019/20*, some arts and cultural facilities were temporary closed during the social events in the second half of 2019, and followed by the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020. This led to a significant drop in both numbers of programmes and performances, attendance as well as box income in 2019/20. The figures are as follows:

• A total of 4,268 performing arts programmes were held in 2019/20, which was 1,021 programmes behind the previous year. Downtrend has been observed across all art form sectors, with Music programmes registered a remarkable drop of 24%;
• Total number of performances dropped by 24% to 7,204 performances this year, with both paid and free performances reduced at the same time (1,521 and 752 fewer than the previous year respectively) ;
• Total attendance fell by 30% to 2.30 million with performances this year. Attendance drop is larger than the percentage decrease in the number of performances across all art form sectors, whereas the audience of Dance programmes and Variety and Pop Shows dropped by nearly 40%;
• With fewer audience, total box office income fell by 30% to HK$368 million in 2019/20. Both total attendance and box office income figures were the lowest since 2008/09.

*The number of programmes in 2019/20 is based on programmes held in 29 arts and cultural facilities during the financial year from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020.  Hong Kong Coliseum, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, AsiaWorld-Expo, Kowloonbay International Trade & Exhibition Centre, etc are not included in the 29 arts and cultural facilities.  (The list of venues will be published with the Hong Kong Annual Arts Survey Report 2019/20.)
