Annual Arts Survey Result Dashboard – 2019/20 Literary Arts

Literary and Reading Promotion Activities dropped 13% to 1,053 in 2019/20*, as a result of the social events in second half of 2019, followed by the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020. The number of Children and Youth Activities reduced by 22% to 532. On the other hand, only a slight drop of 1% in Public Activities was recorded and fell to 521 activities this year.

Majority (84%) of Children and Youth Activities were Reading Activities. Talks including seminars and sharing sessions constituted the largest share (40%, 210 activities) of Public Activities, which also dropped by 15% in 2019/2020. However, more Book Launches and Exhibitions were held (increased by around 20%) in contrary to the decline in Public Activities.

Among the 521 Public Activities, about 40% involved Literary Works such as prose, poems, novels, children literature and biographies**, which was same as previous year. Another one-third of Public Activities involved Non-literary Works like travel, health and wellness, psychology and religion and grew 2% slightly. And given lack of information of some Public activities (25%), book genres were unclassified.
