Annual Arts Survey Result Dashboard – 2019/20 Film Arts

2019/20* recorded a reduction of 8% in the number of Film Festival** programmes from 849 previous year to 777, which remained above the volume in 2017/18.  Despite the reduction in programme counts, a few programmes with hundreds of screenings boosted up the number of paid and free screenings in Film Festivals by 10% (1,321 paid screenings) and 72% (414 free screenings) respectively, and total number of Film Festival screenings surged by more than 20% to 1,735.

On the other hand, Featured/ Individual Screenings remained quite stable in terms of the total number of programmes and screenings (1,049 and 1,896 respectively), the number of paid screenings decreased by 13% while the volume of free screenings grew by one-third from previous year.

In conclusion, there were fewer screening programmes in 2019/20 while total number of screenings recorded a rise by 8%, brought by more Film Festival screenings. Yet as affected by social events in second half of 2019, followed by the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020, total attendance registered a drop by more than 20%, from 379,000 to 291,000 this year.

Total box office income fell by 16% to HKD14.3 million along with the reduction of the number of paid screenings and paid attendance. The figure was also slightly lower than the income record in 2017/18.
