! Useful hints on making an application

Research and Publication Projects
From time to time, HKADC receives enquiries from applicants on whether their projects should be treated as research project or publication project. In fact, the requirements of these two types of grant are different, especially with regard to the requirement on submission of manuscripts of publications.

Research projects
The objective of the HKADC research grant is to support research with outstanding value through an objective record and critical investigation/ evaluation on the topic discussed, contributing knowledge for the public, arts practitioners and policy makers on the topic so that in the long run, to enhance arts development in Hong Kong.Research projects to be considered by HKADC include: (1) academic research in relevant areas that enhance further arts development; or (2) collecting, reorganising and archiving information and documentary which are valuable, representative or require immediate conservation.

In order to help the examiners understand your research project, a research proposal generally should include the following key sections:
a) Research brief
b) research objectives
c) scope of the research
d) methodology of the research
e) assessment mechanism

Generally speaking, research projects that fulfill the above requirements can include a proposed publication of the research results in the project proposal. Manuscript of the aforesaid publication is not necessary when submitting the application. However, applicants should note the research project guidelines of the relevant artform. The requirements for assessing a research project usually is more stringent than a publication project as HKADC only supports those meticulous and high standard research projects.

Publication projects
If the project does not fall into the above criteria for a research project and is only a general publication application applying mainly publication and printing costs, the applicant has to draw reference to the grants guidelines for publications. In general, applicants applying for grants on publication have to submit at least 50% of the manuscript for examiners’ reference.
