Organised by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, the Hong Kong Arts Development Awards is an annual flagship event in the local arts scene. It aims to give formal recognition to distinguished arts practitioners, up-and-coming artists with outstanding achievements, individual, groups and organisations that have actively supported and participated in arts event, education and promotion and made significant contributions to the arts development in Hong Kong.
The Hong Kong Arts Development Awards has kept abreast of times by undertaking preview and adjustments as appropriate. Starting from this edition, the ‘Artist of the Year’ and ‘Award for Young Artist’ continue to accept individual nominees and would accept nominees be nominated as an artist collective; the ‘Award for Arts Promotion’ is expanded to become ‘Award for Arts Promotion and Education’ to better highlight the connotation of arts promotion and the entailing public arts education element therein. Besides, the newly launched online nomination system allows e-submission of nominations which is more convenient and environmentally friendly.

The 16th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards is organised into seven categories.
For the following two awards, nominations and final selection are made by HKADC's Council members and arts advisors:
The highest accolade in the Awards recognises the ongoing contributions of Hong Kong veteran arts practitioners whose achievements are widely acknowledged by the arts community.
Pays tribute to arts practitioners who have made outstanding contributions to various art forms during the past few decades..
The following five awards are open for nominations:
Recognises arts practitioners who have achieved excellence in their respective art forms; each awardee will receive a cash award of HK$50,000 for supporting his/her creative work, arts projects or further studies.
Gives recognition, support and encouragement to young and emerging arts practitioners; each awardee will receive a cash award of HK$25,000 for supporting his / her creative work, arts projects or further studies.
Recognises schools that have outstanding accomplishments in arts education which take place in campus.
Recognises the outstanding achievements of groups, organisations and individuals in arts promotion and education.
Recognises organisations and individuals that have actively sponsored arts events and promoted arts development in Hong Kong.
* The Life Achievement Award (previously known as the Honorary Award) and the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts are not presented posthumously. Previous recipients of these two awards will not be nominated for the same award again.
