To arouse awareness of the importance of intellectual property, the ADC organised a retreat on 9 November at the ADC's Administration Office with Ms Pancy S H Fung, Assistant Director of Intellectual Property Department and Mr Elton Yeung, Chief Executive Officer of the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong Ltd (CASH) as speakers. The overall response was satisfactory.
During the 3-hour long retreat, Ms Pancy Fung concisely introduced the Copyright Ordinance and pointed out that works such as literary (books, computer software), musical, dramatic, artistic (photographs, graphic works), sound recordings, films, broadcasts (TV, radio), cable programmes, page image (including web-page layouts) are automatically protected once created.
Sharing his own experience, Mr Elton Yeung said the gross revenue of CASH in 2001 amounted to HK$100 million, reporting a one per cent increase than the previous year. This reveals the growing importance of intellectual property in the society. However, Mr Yeung said, Hong Kong still lagged behind most of the western countries in the overall awareness of copyright issue.
