The 5th Hong Kong Literature Festival

The 5th Hong Kong Literature Festival
Speech by Dr Darwin Chen, SBS
Chairman of Hong Kong Arts Development Council

Date: July 2, 2004
Venue: Hong Kong Central Library

Ms Anissa Wong and honourable guests,

Literary arts are often related to words and books. Some people may even perceive it as dull and unapproachable. But have you ever thought of integrating it with other media like recitation, performing arts, two-dimensional design and photography? With the advent of information technology, the traditional "book" form is no longer the only medium for presenting literary works. Instead it can be in all kinds of unconventional and highly creative form.

Nowadays, television, computer and video games are the close companions of our youths. The internet's development has further reduced their interest in reading. Nevertheless, the popularity of internet has in turn provided a more favourable environment for literary development in Hong Kong. It offers an opportunity for newly-emerging writers to release their work at extremely low cost - this effectively widens the audience base by building an interactive dialogue and relationship with Chinese readers globally.

To arouse the youths' interest in literary appreciation and help them establish a positive perception towards literary arts, we can build on their interest in different media and expose them to the attraction of outstanding literary works. This would help them cultivate their interests in literary works and explore further the enjoyment of words. It will be a new dimension for the development of Hong Kong literature.

By taking part in this year's literature festival, you can now experience the amazing chemical effects resulting from the integration of literature and other media. For example, the "Arts Performance" activities will enable you to experience how literary works can be transformed on stage; while the "Writing and Postcard Design Competition" will showcase the beauty of poetry expressed through painting and two-dimensional design. The "Literary Film Appreciation" will stage the original work of classic writers on screen. There is a great variety of programmes and activities from which the general public can find something suitable and thus be able to get in touch with the newest literary trend.

Let us recommend this meaningful programme to our friends: to continue our support and active participation in the Literature Festival and enjoy the great fun brought about by the literary arts.
