There is no small number of people practicing photographic arts in Hong Kong and many collections of their individual works have been published.
There is no guarantee of success, however, when such projects are undertaken by individuals, and many a fine pearl remains hidden in the sea, never to be discovered.
Hong Kong Photographers represents a milestone for our profession. This systematic collection of works by local photographers is more than just a record of personal achievements, but is also an anthology in images of Hong Kong’s particular culture. And while collections of this type are well known in the West, in China and in Taiwan, this is the first to be produced here and to feature our most beloved Hong Kong.
Four photographers with differing styles and representing different eras of our common history bring each a distinctive touch to their documentation of the face of their times.
During the turbulent 1970s, John Fung roamed the streets and alleyways of the city, armed only with a camera and an innocent regard, and recorded the lives being lived on the periphery. Lo yuk Ying is a privileged witness to a golden age in entertainment as Hong Kong’s move industry took flight in the 1980s, and produced a body of work that sets down for posterity the personalities that marked the decade. For this part, Wong Kan Tai has cast a sober regard on the past ten years running up to 1997, and the sea changes registered on Hong Kong’s political landscape, while John Choy moves through the metropolis of the 21st century, casting a lover’s fond regard on the solitary trees that stand amidst the bustle, painting the city with a palette of illusion and the absurd.
