Content Summary:

In the midst of political turmoil and the collapse of an empire, Xiao Yuncong (1596-1673) sat in a flooded hut and painted then deceptively simple images. These were landscapes a connoisseur might savour, or where a child could dream. Collected together in a gold brocade album, they survived more than three centuries in private hands. Opening them anew in a Hong Kong that did not exist when they were painted, Eric Wear has written ten prose poems in accompaniment and some casual notes on how to enjoy a Chinese album. These have been elegantly translated into Chinese by noted author Chiu Kwong Chiu and the whole is presented in a design that strives to marry past and present sensibilities. Beautifully produced, this contemporary appreciation of an important work of art will appeal to the world-weary adult and the curious child alike.
