International Arts Leadership Roundtable

The 4th International Arts Leadership Roundtable (the Roundtable) was held on 15 December 2022 in a hybrid mode for both online and physical participation. Similar to the 3rd edition in 2017, HKADC is again invited by the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region’s (HKSAR) Government to hold the Roundtable in conjunction with the Government’s Asia Cultural Cooperation Forum (ACCF) that involves the cultural ministers from Asian countries. The twin event of the 4th Roundtable and ACCF are organised to foster regional and international cultural co-operation of the cultural and arts industries, as one of the highlights of the celebration of the 25th anniversary of the HKSAR.

Under this year’s theme of “RE-CREATE”, 12 global arts leaders from Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Japan, Macao, New Zealand, Singapore, Korea, Australia, United Kingdom, and Canada gathered and discussed how the arts ecology at large had changed since the pandemic and how we could navigate through these changes.

With the theme “Where Do the Arts Lead Us?”, the 3rd International Arts Leadership Roundtable (the Roundtable) was held from 29 to 30 November 2017 at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, gathering around 20 arts leaders from overseas and local arts institutions/ organisations to share their professional insights and experiences in different regions, discuss the global trends and issues in arts development, and formulate relevant strategies to cope with future challenges. This year’s Roundtable was also held concurrently with the Asia Cultural Cooperation Forum 2017, organised by the Home Affairs Bureau, to foster regional cooperation and development in arts and culture.

The Roundtable consisted of 3 plenary sessions during which overseas and local arts leaders were invited to share their views and experiences on a variety of relevant topics. Afterwards, the Closing Discussion was held to conclude the conference with four local arts experts had deeper discussions from a Hong Kong perspective on supporting arts development. Around 200 overseas and local arts organisations’ representatives participated in the conference.

With the theme “Arts in the New World”, the ADC organised the 2nd edition of the International Arts Leadership Roundtable from 29 February to 1 March 2016. The Roundtable had gathered around 20 international and local arts leaders from various arts councils and institutions to discuss the prevailing key arts topics and trends in Hong Kong and around the globe, to exchange ideas on related policies and measures, and to propose strategies to meet future challenges. The conference was also a platform for arts leaders in Hong Kong to engage in in-depth exchanges with overseas speakers and acknowledge the latest development of the arts and culture on the global level.

Speakers were invited to discuss on the following three plenary topics on the first day of the conference: “The Development of Cultural Ecology”, “The Change of Arts Spaces” and “New Thinking for International Exchange”. On the second day, the closing discussion was held with local arts leaders invited to the stage for deeper discussions in response to Hong Kong’s scenario.

Mr. Cai Wu, Chairman of the China National Arts Fund, was invited to participate in the opening of the conference, while Mr. Kim Jong-ryeol, Secretary General of Gwangju Cultural Foundation [Korea], also participated in the conference as observer. The ADC also invited representatives of the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB), Leisure and Cultural Services Department, West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, major arts and arts education institutions, Major Nine Arts Groups, recipients of the ADC’s One-Year/ Two-Year/ Three-Year grants as well as Springboard grantees under HAB’s Arts Capacity Development Funding Scheme to attend the Roundtable.

The inaugural International Arts Leadership Roundtable was held at Asia Society Hong Kong Centre on 8 to 9 November 2013, with the title of “Looking 10 Years Ahead: Towards a More Vibrant Arts Ecology”.
